College Textbooks: Do’s and Don’ts
Do:
- Make a checklist of books you definitely need, may need, and can probably get by without. This will save you time and money.
- Buy your own copy of a book if you can afford it. It’s all too common for a friend to lose your book and you both end up losing the cash.
- Ask for used books. They’re usually in mint condition and about 25% cheaper than a brand new book.
- Find out your campus bookstore’s return policy. Some stores have week-long return policies, which can come quick!
Don’t:
- Wait until the last minute to purchase that Biology book. Sometimes bookstores run out and you may be on mail-order for half the semester.
- Go to a bookstore without proper identification and a credit card. Your bill will most likely be over $500 and most campus stores require you to show a license or ID.
- Throw your receipt away. In the event that you bought the wrong one or your professor decides three weeks into the semester that your class will forego that particular book, you’ll need your receipts.
- Limit yourself to only purchasing from your designated school bookstore. There are many online resources that allow you to compare cheap textbooks.
